Dozens hospitalized after train derails near Philadelphia

Andrew Burton / Reuters

Derailed freight train cars leak vinyl chloride, a colorless, organic gas with a sweet odor sit semi-submerged in the waters of Mantua Creek after a train crash, in Paulsboro, N.J., Nov. 30.

By Kelly Bayliss, NBC10.com

Residents were asked to stay inside their homes for hours after emergency and hazmat crews responded to a train derailment and hazardous material spill Friday morning in Gloucester County, N.J.? More than two dozen people have been transported to a local hospital with respiratory problems after the incident.

Gloucester Office of Emergency Management confirmed that a Conrail train derailed after the bridge it was traveling on collapsed -- for the second time in a little more than three years -- just after 7 a.m. Friday near Commerce Street in Paulsboro, Gloucester County.

Six of the train's cars were dumped into Mantua Creek. Four of the cars contained vinyl chloride, a colorless, organic gas with a sweet odor. One of the train cars was compromised, releasing about 180,000 pounds of the chemical into the creek, according to Conrail spokesperson John Enright.

For more, visit NBC10.com

Vinyl chloride is a colorless flammable gas that is used primarily to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes. It's heavier than air and can travel along the ground, but it evaporates quickly.

Acute exposure via inhalation in humans can cause dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, and even a loss of consciousness, and it is reported to be slightly irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract, according to a statement from Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert Damminger. Anyone who thinks they're suffering any symptoms due to exposure is encouraged to seek medical advice.

Residents were initially told to remain in their homes and local schools were placed on lockdown as emergency officials assessed air quality concerns.? At least 28 people were transported from the scene to Underwood Memorial Hospital, all complaining of respiratory problems. Officials confirm that some of the injured are workers from the Paulsboro Marine Terminal.

?Photos:?Paulsboro Train Derailment

??Personal safety is our number one concern,? U.S. Coast Guard Petty officer Nick Ameen told NBC10.

Officials determined at about 11 a.m. that air quality had improved, meaning the situation was under control.? However, they cautioned that the next significant threat will be when Conrail attempts to lift the cars out of the water without releasing any more chemicals.

Paulsboro School District was on lockdown until about 11 a.m. Students were dismissed when officials determined the air quality had improved.

The School District's Superintendent Dr. Frank Scambia told NBC10 that 50 students from all three of the district's schools were on lockdown inside the gymnasium at the high school.

The Fire Department also evacuated all employees on Commerce Street.

"The whole day is a wash," Doug Ricotta, owner of D&D Italian Bakery, told NBC10. "Everything's shutdown."

Roadways leading into Paulsboro were closed.

iraqi news: orpitasingh: Horse Racing History | recreation and sports

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world?s major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire?s decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.

Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today?s horse racing breeds.

As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport?s continued well being.

All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. The facility to bet and earn cash legally from the result of horse races has been a core part of this sport?s appeal and a major factor behind its survival as a sport with a presence.

Two tickets share record $588 million Powerball win

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Winning tickets bought in Arizona and Missouri matched numbers drawn for a record Powerball lottery jackpot of $588 million, the Multi-State Lottery Association said.

Holders of the two winning tickets in the Wednesday night draw will share an estimated $385 million if they opt to take it as a lump sum. Alternatively, the $588 million can be paid out to them as annuities over three decades, the association said.

The drawing took place at 10:59 p.m. EST, with winning numbers 5 16 22 23 29, and a Powerball of 6. The Association did not say if the ticket holders had come forward yet to claim their vast cash prizes.

Powerball spokeswomen in Arizona and Missouri did not immediately respond to emails seeking further details on the winners.

The popular lottery - which is played in 42 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands - had not had a winner for two months. After no one won the top prize in Saturday's drawing, the pot had grown by about $263 million to $578.5 million amid a rush to buy tickets.

The previous Powerball top prize of $365 million was won in 2006 by ConAgra slaughterhouse workers in Nebraska. The largest-ever U.S. lottery jackpot, the $656 million Mega Millions drawing, was shared by three winning tickets last March.

Mary Neubauer, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, where Powerball is based, said lottery officials had received calls and emails from people around the world asking if they can buy a ticket. They cannot.

There have been nearly 300 jackpot winners over the past 20 years, taking home payouts of over $11.6 billion.

Children with higher intelligence less likely to report chronic widespread pain in adulthood

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? A UK-based study team has determined that there is a correlation between childhood intelligence and chronic widespread pain (CWP) in adulthood, according to a new study published in the December issue of PAIN?. About 10-15 percent of adults report CWP, a common musculoskeletal complaint that tends to occur more frequently among women and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. CWP is a core symptom of fibromyalgia and is one of the most common reasons for consulting a rheumatologist.

"One psychological factor that could potentially be a risk factor for CWP in adult life is lower cognitive ability in youth," says lead researcher Dr Catharine R. Gale, MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, UK, and Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, Department of Psychology, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK. "Our hypotheses were that men and women who scored lower on the test of intelligence in childhood would have an increased risk of CWP in midlife and that some of this association would be mediated through socioeconomic status, mental health, or lifestyle factors in adulthood."

The investigators used data from the National Child Development Survey, an ongoing cohort study originally based on over 17,000 live births in Great Britain during one week in 1958. When cohort members were aged 11 years, they completed a test of intelligence. At the age of 45 years, 6902 cohort members took part in a biomedical survey during which they completed a questionnaire to assess the presence of chronic widespread pain (CWP).

CWP was found among 14.4 percent of the participants. Men and women with CWP scored significantly lower on the test of intelligence at age 11. They were also more likely to have manual jobs, to be a current or ex-smoker, to have a higher body mass index, and to report higher levels of psychological distress.

The study concluded that men and women with lower intelligence at age 11 are more likely to report CWP.

Says Gale, "To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the prospective relation between intelligence and CWP. Our results show that individuals with higher intelligence in childhood are less likely as adults to develop this common and disabling condition. We now need to understand the mechanisms causing this association."

In a commentary accompanying the article, Eva M. Kingma and Judith G.M. Rosmalen of the Interdisciplinary Center Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, The Netherlands say: "Although an association between chronic pain and cognitive ability has been shown before, the Gale et al. report is the first longitudinal study in a large general population cohort.

Two important characteristics stand out in their study. First, its longitudinal design enabled the researchers to study causal direction as well as interesting explanatory mechanisms in the association between intelligence and pain. Second, the study used a population-based design, which contrasts with many previous etiological studies that compared patients to healthy controls. This approach is especially relevant because CWP is much more prevalent than clinical data on fibromyalgia suggest.

Fifa 13 ultimate team auto-buy/seller | AJAX | C++ Programming ...

Project Description:
Hello,

I require someone who can build me an autobuyer to work on the FIFA 13 Ultimate Team Web App. Here is the link http://www.ea.com/uk/football/fifa-ultimate-team

The web app lets you buy a sell players that are in the FIFA 13 game, you can also buy and sell kits, stadiums and managers etc

I have the ps3 version of the game
An autobuyer is basically custom software that can control the FUT Web App and set variables so that it will automatically buy and sell players/items which are listed at auction for certain prices etc. This will be done in a website which i can upload on a php-server and it will work. Where i can put in the variables (player/item prices) and that the auto-buyer will ?scan? the FIFA 13 Ultimate Team Web App and buy/sell the item i setted for the price i also puted in.

So for example if the average price of a certain player is 10,000 then i want to be able to set the variables of the autobuyer up so that if that player comes on the market for 9,000 or under the autobuyer will automatically buy the player.

Requirements of the auto-buyer:
- Refresh rate should be 1 second or lower to scan the Fifa 13 ?market? for items/players which are in a list with a certain price and then act on it;
- i should be able to put a list of items which will be bought if they go below a certain price, these
should be automaticly be bought, multiple buys possible with one scan.
- It should be able for the program/site to sell players for a certain price (which i setted in the variables)
- i should be able to set variables for items it scans for in a designed screen
- The output has to be clear. There needs to be a log page which saves what has been bought/sold.
- The program/site has to be clear, user friendly that it shows what it does. Diffrent pages/tabs for the options.

Here is a YouTube video of an example of an autobuyer program for last years game FIFA 12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m_16oxHO2U

And here is a link to a blog by Rob McGhee, Rob has written a lot of code which he says will make it relatively easy for someone with coding knowledge to make an Autobuyer for FIFA 13. I have also put a link to the master PHP files which Rob refers to in his blog

http://www.robmcghee.com/programming/using-my-fifa13-code/
https://github.com/mousey/FIFA13-Ultimate-Team-Search/tree/master/code

Here is a link to a forum thread that has some information that may be useful in researching this project
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads/making-autobuyer-is-it-recommendable-to-use-main-account.801298/

I hope to find someone who can make it for me.

Every iPhone Needs A Thumper Suitcase Boombox

Thumper_iPhone_Suitcase_Boombox

?

I can't say that I've seen a more kick-ass retro boombox than the Thumper. The dangerous minds at Cool Provisions have been churning out these rechargeable vintage suitcase boombox creations for quite some time now.

Although they start at around $490 and work their up to $1,600 dollars a piece ? these one-of-a-kind traveling speakers are constantly selling out. It must be because they're so damn cool.

Most Thumpers come equipped with volume, bass and treble controls mounted along the side and deliver around 8 hours of playtime after a recharge.

The bulk of these hand-crafted speakers created by David Preiss and Javier Santana ? date back from the 1920s to the late 1960s which gives them that classic rock swagger. Imagine the stories they would tell if they could only talk.

While a cable is typically used to connect an iPhone 5 or iPod ? but a bluetooth adapter can be used to wirelessly stream your music and any Thumper can be transformed into a guitar amp by using the iRig adapter which is sold separately for around $40 bucks.

For those about to THUMP ? we salute you!

Forget #GivingTuesday. Want to Save the World? Send a Tweet ...

Next month marks my fifth anniversary on Twitter. I feel like I owe a lot to the humble tweet. It?s helped me find more readers for my blog. I?ve learned a lot about social media and cause marketing. I?ve even made some great friends on Twitter ? some of whom I?ve actually met.

Every tweet calls for words that are clear, direct, active and short. The practice has spilled over into my writing and blogging, to my public speaking and even to my PowerPoint slides.

Not everyone agrees that Twitter is a positive force in modern language. The actor?Ralph?Fiennes?has complained that Twitter has all but ruined language?and laments ?a world of truncated sentences.? Others like?Bill Keller have concluded that Twitter makes us forgetful?and just sound dumb.

Even if we concede that Bill and Ralph are right ? which I don?t think they are ? the situation outside of Twitter is far, far worse, and is a greater threat to the English language.

Sadly, the people I generally work with, marketing and communication professionals who should be word ninjas, and nonprofits that should be testing the limits of humanizing language, are the worse offenders.

A marketing executive said last week that a company had ?differentiated [itself] from the competition and given it an edge to communicating brand values during the holidays and amid a struggling economy.? At 146 characters, this sentence would not have survived the Twitter word grinder. Perhaps a better, clearer alternative is ?The business has stood out over the holidays because it did the right thing for people stuck in a terrible job market.? [118 characters, a better length for retweeting on Twitter].

Bloated language is similar to highly processed fast foods with their chemicals and miscellaneous animal parts: you can?t call it real food.?And like our poor food choices, these words don?t nourish, feed or fill us. They?re empty calories, and leave our readers and listeners unsatisfied.

Thankfully, Twitter is the farmer?s market of language. Selection is limited, but everything is home grown and good for you.

Twitter?s character limit keeps me focused on what I call?Famous Last Words (FLW), the one thing you want your reader to remember more than anything else. It?s just one or two sentences and there is little or no room for adjectives. Nouns and verbs do the work. And you have to play with the words to convey your meaning in the limited space. You have to cut, tighten and swap to get it right.?140 characters is a sentence?scythe.

You may think that most people don?t spend much time fixing their tweets. Think again. Twitter doesn?t give you much of a choice.

Try it for yourself. Sign up for a?Twitter account, type in a sentence or two as you would in any normal email and hit the send button. It will go nowhere because you?re over the character limit. Now go back and edit the tweet so it?s fewer than 140 characters but still says something. Congratulations, you have a FLW.

Before you hit the send button, read it one more time. What do you see? Nouns and verbs. Few or no adjectives and adverbs. Words that have Anglo-Saxon, not Latin, origin. Lastly, your tweet reflects your awareness that anyone can read it so you better not sound stupid.

Now you?re ready to send a second tweet. Don?t worry. You?ll improve quickly.

The 19th century American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson said of his writing, ?I am a rocket manufacturer.? Each of his sentences speaks to the reader independent of the sentence before or aft. Emerson would have been a natural on Twitter.

You probably won?t be, as least not to start. But soon you?ll be tweeting like a pro and writing and speaking better too. And whether it?s marketing a new product, leading a company in difficult times or inspiring people to support a cause, more rocket makers are just what the world needs.

New Android apps worth downloading: Speaktoit Assistant update, ForeverMap 2, Hyperwave

Fire up today?s leading new app, an updated Speaktoit Assistant, to get the most out of using voice commands with your Android device. In addition, ForeverMap 2, an app designed to make traveling easy whether you?re offline or online, and Hyperwave, a 2.5-D arcade shooter with a flashy neon art style.

What?s it about? Another voice-activated command app, Speaktoit Assistant can launch apps, search the Internet and answer questions, all with commands spoken in natural language.

What?s cool? Speaktoit Assistant has undergone a huge overhaul, bringing a big redesign to the user interface and a number of improvements to the app. It also now features social connectivity that lets you share Assistant?s answers to questions with your friends. At its core, the app remains all about finding information, and mirrors similar technology like Apple?s Siri, giving you the ability to find a lot of different things, ranging from weather reports to maps and more. Just keep in mind that Speaktoit Assistant is still a beta release and is undergoing further improvements.

Who?s it for? If you like voice command technology, you should definitely try out Speaktoit Assistant.

What?s it like? Check out other virtual assistant apps in Skyvi and EVA.

What?s it about? Maps app ForeverMap 2 lets you access online, GPS-style maps as you would get from other mapping applications, but lets you download maps for later offline use.

What?s cool? First off, ForeverMap 2 packs a lot of highly detailed and useful maps for a number of different states, countries and locations. If you?re looking for an alternative map app, this is a solid one. Even better is that ForeverMap 2 can provide a ton of maps for offline use, too, allowing you to navigate new states, countries, or wherever. You?ll get your first offline map set for free, and additional maps can be purchased.

Who?s it for? Travelers who could use both online and offline map alternatives.

What?s it like? Google?s Maps is a well-loved favorite, and Maps (-) lets you cache maps for offline viewing.

?

What?s it about? Arcade shooter Hyperwave puts players up against waves of alien invaders, with tons of enemies to dodge and destroy.

What?s cool? Hyperwave uses a 2.5-D viewpoint, which means it looks 3-D, but players actually play on a 2-D plane. That perspective is something of a novelty, as is the game?s heavy neon, laser-inspired art style. Beyond the looks, Hyperwave effectively keeps players in the action all the time, forcing them to dodge incoming enemies while trying to defend the bottom of the screen, not unlike Space Invaders. You also find power-ups that make your ship more powerful along the way.

Who?s it for? If you like arcade shooters and titles such as Space Invaders, Hyperwave is definitely worth a try.

What?s it like? Developer Catfish Games also has a title called Hyperlight, which is similar but offers a different experience.

To get the best look at a person's face, look just below the eyes

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. However, to get a real idea of what a person is up to, according to UC Santa Barbara researchers Miguel Eckstein and Matt Peterson, the best place to check is right below the eyes. Their findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's pretty fast, it's effortless ?? we're not really aware of what we're doing," said Miguel Eckstein, professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences. Using an eye tracker and more than 100 photos of faces and participants, Eckstein and graduate research assistant Peterson followed the gaze of the experiment's participants to determine where they look in the first crucial moment of identifying a person's identity, gender, and emotional state.

"For the majority of people, the first place we look at is somewhere in the middle, just below the eyes," Eckstein said. One possible reason could be that we are trained from youth to look there, because it's polite in some cultures. Or, because it allows us to figure out where the person's attention is focused.

However, Peterson and Eckstein hypothesize that, despite the ever-so-brief ?? 250 millisecond ?? glance, the relatively featureless point of focus, and the fact that we're usually unaware that we're doing it, the brain is actually using sophisticated computations to plan an eye movement that ensures the highest accuracy in tasks that are evolutionarily important in determining flight, fight, or love at first sight.

"When you look at a scene, or at a person's face, you're not just using information right in front of you," said Peterson. The place where one's glance is aimed is the place that corresponds to the highest resolution in the eye ?? the fovea, a slight depression in the retina at the back of the eye ?? while regions surrounding the foveal area ?? the periphery ?? allow access to less spatial detail.

However, according to Peterson, at a conversational distance, faces tend to span a larger area of the visual field. There is information to be gleaned, not just from the face's eyes, but also from features like the nose or the mouth. But when participants were directed to try to determine the identity, gender, and emotion of people in the photos by looking elsewhere ?? the forehead, the mouth, for instance ?? they did not perform as well as they would have by looking close to the eyes.

Using a sophisticated algorithm, which mimics the varying spatial detail of human processing across the visual field and integrates all information to make decisions, allowed Peterson and Eckstein to predict what would be the best place within the faces to look for each of these perceptual tasks. They found that these predicted places varied moderately across tasks, and closely corresponded to where humans actually do look.

At least for the three important tasks investigated ?? identity, emotion, and gender ?? below the eyes is the optimal place to look, say the scientists, because it allows one to read information from as many features of the face as possible.

"What the visual system is adept at doing is taking all those pieces of information from your face and combining them in a statistical manner to make a judgment about whatever task you're doing," said Eckstein. The area around the eyes contains minute bits of important information, which require the high resolution processing close to the fovea, whereas features like the mouth are larger and can be read without a direct gaze.

The study shows that the ability to learn optimal rapid eye movement for evolutionarily important perceptual tasks is inherent in humans; however, say the scientists, it is not necessarily consistent behavior for everybody. Eckstein's lab is currently involved in studying a small subset of people who do not look just below the eyes to identify a person. Other researchers have shown that East Asians, for instance, tend look lower on the face when identifying a person's face.

The research by Peterson and Eckstein has resulted in sophisticated new algorithms to model optimal gaze patterns when looking at faces. The algorithms could potentially be used to provide insight into conditions like schizophrenia and autism, which are associated with uncommon gaze patterns, or prosopagnosia ?? an inability to recognize someone by his or her face.

US Scientific R&D Could Face Fiscal Cliff Doom

The tough economic times have had a huge effect on scientific research and development funding. The looming "fiscal cliff" may be the last straw for many programs. "The American science programs that landed the first man on the moon, found cures for deadly diseases and bred crops that feed the world now face the possibility of becoming relics in the story of human progress.

American scientific research and development stands to lose thousands of jobs and face a starvation diet of reduced funding if politicians fail to compromise and halt the United States' march towards the fiscal cliff's sequestration of federal funds."

Toward the bottom of the rankings, there was plenty of movement. Ten Top 25 teams lost this weekend, the most since Oct. 11, 2003.

No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia, both easy winners in rivalry games Saturday, held their spots in the rankings and will play for the SEC title in Atlanta next weekend.

Ohio State remained No. 4 after completing its perfect season with a victory against Michigan. The Buckeyes (12-0) are banned from the postseason because of NCAA sanctions.

Florida moved up a spot to No. 5 after beating Florida State.

Four teams from BCS non-automatic qualifying leagues are ranked. No. 18 Kent State and No. 19 Northern Illinois will play for the Mid-American Conference title Friday. No. 20 Utah State wrapped up its season as Western Athletic Conference champ.

No. 25 Boise State will play for a share of the Mountain West title against Nevada on Saturday.

The Big East had two teams fall out of the rankings, Rutgers and Louisville. The Scarlet Knights and Cardinals will play Thursday night with the Big East title and BCS bid on the line.

Boise State and No. 22 Northwestern moved back into the rankings.

Black Friday: Boutiques open at midnight? How ?little guys? try to compete.

Many small business owners are looking for their piece of the Black Friday retail pie. But experts say trying to match the big stores may not be the best policy, and warn shoppers to do their homework, too.

By Daniel B. Wood,?Staff writer / November 22, 2012

From midnight on Thanksgiving night until 3 a.m., Julia Dvir?s store, ?The Closet,? will further discount her jewelry, hats, belts, and purses (already 40-60 percent off). Located just 80 yards up the Fashion Square Mall from Macy?s, the boutique is trying to take advantage of people who will be lined up to shop at the national retailer.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

At the other end of the mall, S.Y.L.K, another women?s fashion retailer just outside Bloomingdales, also is opening at midnight, with the hope that shoppers on the prowl for Black Friday deals at the much larger store will look up and see them as well.

?We want to pull that traffic from the early bird shoppers into our store,? manager Kathleen Moore told the Los Angeles Times.

Faced with the competition posed by colossal deals offered by major retailers ? just blocks away from the mall, tents are lined up outside a Best Buy with half-price jumbo TVs for the first 30 in line ? smaller retailers and specialty shops are trying to figure out how to get into the Black Friday action.

Burned in past years by setting up their deals too late ? and with fully half of their yearly sales on the line between now and Christmas ? the nation?s retail ?little guys? are realizing that moment can?t wait.

This year, with several giant retailers from Walmart to Target to Toys ?R? Us launching major product pushes as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the stakes are higher than ever.

?What is at stake for boutique shoppers is the opportunity to take advantage of a consumer?s mindset to shop,? says Roger Beahm, executive director of the Center for Retail Innovation at the Wake Forest Schools of Business in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Smaller shops located at malls are well positioned physically to take advantage of the bigger stores? promotions, he says.

Consumers ?are in a shopping mode and want to get their Christmas shopping done,? he says. ?Boutiques should capitalize on this, as it?s something that larger retailers have already built. It?s the mall strategy ? anchor stores draw customers in, but boutiques take advantage of increased number of customers eager to buy.?

And he notes that this strategy, ?in a broader sense, doesn?t just apply to bricks and mortar.?

Many cities are highlighting special gatherings of smaller retailers ? pushing the idea of staying small and ?staying local? as a way of boosting the tax base in the community, as well as rewarding the creative, innovative and non-corporate.

?This is a really nice way of honoring the brick and mortar stores, the mom and pop outlets who really can?t compete with the deals of goliath retailers,? says Ron Elkus, of ?The Shirt Box? in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Firefox 64bit development for Windows gets 'turned off' by Mozilla

Looking to browse with the full weight of your 64-bit hardware? Well, if you're a Firefox and Windows user, you're going to have to look elsewhere, as Mozilla has announced it's closing the development of Firefox for the bigger computer architecture. Mozilla manager, Benjamin Smedberg outlined several reasons for the decision, including limited access to 64-bit plugins, a higher propensity for the browser to hang when using available plug-ins and difficulty distinguishing between 32- and 64-bit versions when dealing with stability complaints. After posting the announcement at Bugzilla, it riled plenty of nightly testers, with one Mozilla dev suggesting that around half of them were currently using the now defunct 64-bit version -- presumably due to the fact that an official release never made it out of the gates. What are the options then, if you need your browsing 64-bit? You could return to Internet Explorer or give Opera a try -- both offer a higher bit version, or make a switch to either OS X or Linux, both of which have fully-fleshed versions of the 64-bit web browser. Check out some of the (surprisingly vigorous) debate at the source below.

Rare rhino fossil preserved by prehistoric volcanic eruption

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Less than 2% of the earth's fossils are preserved in volcanic rock, but researchers have identified a new one: the skull of a rhino that perished in a volcanic eruption 9.2 million years ago. The find is described in a paper published November 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Pierre-Olivier Antoine and colleagues from the University of Montpellier, France.

The fossil, found in Turkey, is thought to be that of a large two-horned rhino common in the Eastern Mediterranean region during that period. According to the researchers, unusual features of the preserved skull suggest that the animal was 'cooked to death' at temperatures that may have approached 500? C, in a volcanic flow similar to that of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy in 79 A.D.

The rhino's grisly death was near-instantaneous, and followed by severe dehydration in the extreme heat of the eruption. As the researchers describe its end, "the body was baked under a temperature approximating 400?C, then dismembered within the pyroclastic flow, and the skull separated from body". The flow of volcanic ash then moved the skull about 30 km north of the eruption site, where it was discovered by the four member research team.

Although other researchers have previously identified fossils of soft-bodied organisms preserved in volcanic ash, organic matter near an active volcanic eruption is usually quickly destroyed by the high temperatures, making a fossil such as this one extremely rare.

Herbivore defense in ferns

Thursday, November 22, 2012

They dominated the earth for 200 million years and numerous different species can still be found all over the world: mosses, horsetails and ferns. Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, have now found out that bracken ferns (Pteridium aquilinum) do not release any volatiles when they are attacked ? unlike many of the now dominant and evolutionary younger flowering plants. Such an emission of volatile compounds may attract the pest insects' enemies, such as ichneumon wasps or predatory bugs, that parasitize herbivores. Nevertheless, volatile emission could be also elicited in fern fronds, if they had been treated with plant hormone jasmonic acid. Jasomonic acid induces the synthesis of volatile substances in flowering plants. This suggests that ferns can in principle mobilize this kind of defense reaction. However, they do not use this indirect defense to fend off herbivores.

Only few herbivores attack ferns

Ferns are so-called vascular cryptogams, because they don't produce flowers and seeds like the currently largest group of plants, the spermatophytes or seed plants. Ferns reproduce and spread entirely via spores. Their metabolic activities and especially their defenses against herbivores, however, are similarly efficient in comparison to flowering plants. Ferns can be found in large populations all over the world, although their evolutionary age is more than 400 million years.

Botanists consider the bracken fern Pteridium aquilinum as one of the most widely distributed plant species. It can be found in the most different habitats. Herbivores attack bracken ferns strikingly less often than flowering plants. One explanation for this phenomenon could be that fern fronds contain especially toxic substances that keep pest insects at bay: Chemical composition analysis detected indanones, cyanogenic glycosides and tannins, amongst other substances. But can those "living fossils" also use indirect defenses against their enemies, like other plants do?

Defense mechanisms in bracken fern include indirect defenses. However, herbivory does not induce them

Beans, corn, cotton, poplar trees, tobacco plants and potatoes: These and other flowering plants are known to produce the plant hormone jasmonic acid in their leaves after herbivore attack. Jasmonic acid stimulates the synthesis of volatile substances, such as compounds of the terpenoid family. This defense strategy can be used by plants to attract the enemies of herbivorous insect larvae. Venkatesan Radhika, PhD student in the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry of the institute, wanted to find out, whether bracken ferns could also emit these attractants when they were attacked. She used larvae of two insect herbivore species to damage the fern fronds: fern specialist Strongylogaster multifasciata and the generalist herbivore Spodoptera littoralis, which feeds on many different plants. She also used a robotic device, MecWorm, which continuously punched a limited area of the fern frond with a metal bolt, thereby mimicking the mechanical wounding caused by feeding herbivores. The result: The fern fronds release only very small amounts of volatile compounds, if at all. Even the signal molecule jasmonic acid could hardly be detected in the fronds.

However, if fern fronds were directly treated with jasmonic acid, they responded like the leaves of flowering plants and they released a typical odor bouquet. The scientists studied this effect in more detail and discovered that the release of volatile terpenoids from the fern could even be induced by treatment with early precursors of jasmonic acid synthesis (OPDA and linolenic acid). Biochemical experiments revealed that these volatile terpenoids are produced by the same metabolic pathway already known from flowering plants. "It is likely that the herbivory-induced accumulation of jasmonic acid is not sufficient to trigger the production of volatile compounds in our experiments," says Wilhelm Boland, director of the department.

Could it be possible that ferns do not need indirect defenses by means of volatile emission? Is the presence of highly toxic substances in the fern fronds sufficient to fend off herbivores? "We can only speculate," says Boland. Indirect defense strategies may have evolved from originally direct defenses (e.g. in the Chinese ladder brake, Pteris vittata) or, on the other hand, in the context of pollinator attraction to volatiles, which is a trait that has naturally evolved in flowering and seed-producing plants and not in flowerless ferns, the scientist continues. It remains fascinating though, that even without apparent indirect defenses bracken ferns successfully colonize our planet to this day. [JWK/AO]

Fetus Yawning Reveals Brain Development

Even fetuses yawn, a new study shows.

During the second and third trimester, fetuses yawn frequently, and those yawns can be distinguished in four-dimensional ultrasounds from other mouth-opening behaviors. As the fetuses mature, they seem to yawn less frequently, the researchers added.

The findings, published Nov. 21 in the journal PLoS One, suggest yawning patterns of the fetus across pregnancy could be used to assess whether a growing fetus is developing normally.

Scientists don't know why adults, let alone babies, yawn, said study co-author Nadja Reissland, a developmental psychologist at Durham University in the United Kingdom. ?But yawning behavior changes throughout life. [See Images of Yawning in the Womb]

Yawns in adults are contagious, but babies don't catch them. Anemic babies yawn more in utero than healthy ones, according to a 1999 study detailed in the journal Ultrasound Obstetrics and Gynecology. And premature babies yawn more than full-term babies. (Previous research has shown that as fetuses develop, their facial expressions in the womb become more complex.)

That led Reissland to wonder whether yawning patterns could be an early marker of healthy development that could be seen even in utero.

While doctors frequently capture ultrasound images of open-mouthed fetuses, those scans couldn't distinguish yawning from reflexive mouth opening that prepares the baby to breast-feed, Reissland told LiveScience.

To do so, the team the team took three-dimensional ultrasound videos of seven female and eight male fetuses once a month, as they grew from 24 weeks to 36 weeks gestation (roughly five months to eight months into pregnancy). The babies-to-be yawned about six times an hour at 24 weeks, but yawning waned over the 12-week period and had stopped by 36 weeks. A 3D-ultrasound video produces 4D-ultrasound images, as the fourth dimension is time.

Reissland and her colleagues are unsure of fetal yawning's function, though they say it is not a sign of sleepiness. Rather, because the scans suggest yawning follows a predictable trajectory over fetal development, the behavior may be linked to brain development early in gestation, said Reissland.

"In fact, yawning might be a trigger for brain maturation," she told LiveScience. "Ultimately, it could be used in medical practice. If you see a fetus yawning a lot, there might be some problem."

East Coast Diva eying to upset Daraghs Book in Williamhill.com Stakes

East Coast Diva will be looking to upset Daraghs Book in the Williamhill.com Stakes at Newcastle in England on Tuesday, November 20, 2012. Both greyhounds are capable of winning Grade A1 races with consistency, thus the competition amongst them will be a really good one.

The latter of the two has managed to win the confidence of the bookmakers today, thus he has been given the highest odds for victory. He will enter the contest with a starting price of 5 to 2 and the punters will definitely risk a lot of bets in his favour.

Although, the young dog does not have a lot of experience, yet he is considered to be a fierce competitor in this class. Moreover, he is carrying the winning momentum right now, which will give him immense confidence.

The G. Gibbinson?s trained hound has mostly run in 480 metres races, which will put him in a comfortable position today. He will have to cover the same distance in order to bag a cash prize of ?133 in the end.

However, the young runner will not be entering the race from an ideal position and there will be immense pressure on him. He has been slotted in trap number three, which means that he might get crowded at the start. This could prove to be too costly for him, thus he will need to be lightning quick in the beginning.

In his most recent Grade A1 outing, Daraghs Book finished on top of the table, despite not being rated as the favourite to succeed. He was up against some very good runners and had to work extremely hard in order to claim the top spot. He did not panic though and made his team proud at the end of the day.

On the other hand, East Coast Diva will look to spoil the party for the race favourite greyhound, as she is a talented bitch. She knows how to pressurise her opponents and will be starting from trap number one, which will allow her to gain some momentum at the start.

The P. Rutherford?s trainee has never appeared in a Grade A1 contest though, which will put some uncertainty in the minds of the bettors.
