Via Jonathan Martin, Mitt Romney is sending direct mail in Iowa as part of an expected effort to make an aggressive final push in the weeks before the Jan. 3 caucuses.
Continue ReadingThe mail is essentially two messages - electability, and anti-immigration. One side speaks to Romney's position on immigration, with words that the GOP primary electorate has been listening to (especially amid new focus on Newt Gingrich's non-demagogued position in the CNN debate last week, and with Rick Perry's self-inflicted wounds on the issue). Among them? Border fence, no "free rides," and so forth.
On the other side is a simple line about how in "30 minutes" Iowans can avoid four more years of President Obama, whose picture is on the mailer.
The imaging sets up the general election concept that has been a hallmark of both the Romney and Obama campaigns for weeks now. But by saying "It's up to you, Iowa," Romney reminds the state that they can end the nominating process pretty quickly if he wins the caucuses.
UPDATE: Jennifer Jacobs has a report on another Romney piece, clearly aimed at different (social conservative) targets - this one with a similar message on Obama and electability, but the B-side focuses on "values" and, she notes, appears to have Romney with his head a bit bowed, almost as in prayer.
